As Your Excellency appears to think that my services in that capacity may be of advantage to the Public Service, I have no hesitation in undertaking the duties of that office. At the same time, having regard to the language of Section VII. of Ordinance No.9 of 1845, I feel that I could not do so without incurring considerable risk and anxiety unless I previously placed in Your Excellency's hands, as I now have the honor to do, my resignation of the acting Judgeship of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction. The loss of that office and of half my salary as Attorney General, and especially of my private practice at the Bar during Mr. Smale's absence, must necessarily entail upon me large pecuniary sacrifice, but it is one to which, under the circumstances, I feel that I am bound to submit.
